Argyll Whisky Beer

Gas-tro-pub – a British term for a public house that specializes in serving high-quality food. We wanted to try a new place for lunch and decided on Argyll Whisky Beer, located in the old Las Margaritas space on 17th Avenue. We have always liked the space, as it is open and sunny and the redesign didn’t disappoint. The décor is modern and still maintains the open design.
It was a quiet, mid-week afternoon and we were seated promptly. Our waitress came and took our drink orders and left us a few minutes with our menus. The lunch menu had a nice variety from sandwiches and burgers to more substantial fare. After making the painful decision about what to eat (because everything looked good!), I decided on the fish and chips and my lunch date went with the lamb burger based on the waitresses recommendation.
The food took longer than either of us expected, so that was a little disappointing. Neither of us needed to get out of there quickly but I would definitely take that into consideration if you are in a rush. When the food did finally arrive both meals looked delicious. My fish and chips were served on a wood plank with one piece of fish, thick-cut fries and mint pea mash. All of it was great but honestly, the stand out was the pea mash. I don’t know that I would order it again, as there was a lot of breading and it was really oily. My date devoured his lamb burger and had nothing but great things to say about it. He really liked the flavor of the lamb and the yogurt cucumber relish on top. Both of us really liked the fries that came with both of our meals. The wait staff overall was attentive but did lack a little considering it was lunch hour during the week and there weren’t a lot of people there.
While I enjoyed our experience at Argyll Whisky Beer was a good one I took away two things. One, don’t go for lunch during the week if you are in a rush. Two, I would definitely try something other than the fish and chips. Like I mentioned earlier, they were good but there are other things on the menu that I would choose before the fish and chips again. Three, if you like lamb, definitely try the lamb burger, as that was the standout for us. Overall, I would definitely give this place another try. None of the negatives were enough to keep us from going again. This is definitely a welcome addition to the growing restaurant selection on 17th Avenue.
